ABOUT THE PROJECT
Interchange 105 was originally constructed in 1955 and consisted of one structure carrying Route 36 traffic over the two northbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway (GSP) to the two southbound lanes. The interchange was expanded in 1974 when the GSP added the northbound and southbound inner roadway. The current configuration includes six bridge structures that carry traffic over Garden State Parkway (GSP) Mainline, servicing NJ Route 36 and Jersey shore communities.
In recent years, deterioration of the superstructure and deck has required the New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) to perform priority maintenance repairs to ensure continued safe travel of vehicles. The bridge substructure units (existing piers and abutments) are in satisfactory condition; however, the superstructure is deteriorated and is approaching the end of its useful life.
The project consists of four work areas (Work Areas A, B, C, and D). To complete each work area, a full closure of that ramp will be required and traffic will be detoured to either Interchanges 102 or 109.
Work Area C – GSP Southbound Inner/Express to Rt. 36
is the ramp structure from the southbound inner (Express) roadway (i.e., Ramp E3) and includes Structures 106.4I and 106.4NO. The detour for Work Area C will take you down to Exit 102 and north to Route 36 via local roads.
Work Area D – Rt. 36 to GSP Northbound Inner/Express
is the ramp structure from from the toll plaza to the northbound inner (Express) lanes (i.e., Ramp E4) and includes Structure 106.5NO. The detour for Work Area D will utilize the GSP northbound outer (Local) roadway.
Work Area A – Rt. 36 to GSP Southbound Inner/Express
is the ramp structure from the toll plaza to the southbound inner (Express) roadway (i.e., Ramp E1) and includes Structures 106.3I, 106.4NO and 106.4A. The detour for Work Area A will either take you south on Route 18 to Exit 102 or north on the GSP to make a U-turn at Exit 109.
Work Area B – GSP Southbound Outer/Local to Rt. 36
is the ramp structure from the southbound outer (Local) roadway (i.e., Ramp E2) and includes Structures 106.4I and 106.4NO. The detour for Work Area B will take you off the GSP SB at Exit 105 onto Wayside Road. Local roads will be used to take you back to Route 36.
The project will be completed in two stages. Stage 1 will start in the spring of 2022 and will include the full closure of ramps associated with Work Areas C and D. This stage is expected to take approximately nine months, with completion scheduled for fall of 2022.
Upon completion of Stage 1, Stage 2 will begin with the full closure of Work Areas A and B. Work Area A will take approximately seven months and has a milestone completion date of May 15, 2023. Work Area B will take approximately two additional months, continuing through the summer of 2023.
